Alicia Keys headlined the Essence Music Festival on Saturday. Jada Pinkett introduced the powerhouse singer 25 minutes after midnight, and Keys started her performance off with “Love is Blind” from her 2009 album, The Element of Freedom.
Keys switched between several different types of keyboards, a baby grand piano and an electronic keyboard among them, while singing “Fallin,” “Diary,” “Like You’ll Never See Me Again,” “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart,” and at least a dozen other inspirational songs. When it came time for her to sing “Till You See My Smile,” Keys climbed atop the baby grande piano and the crowd sang along during the chorus.
USA Today reports that “current hit ‘Empire State of Mind Part 2,’ played against a video backdrop of the Manhattan skyline, illuminated the affection that New Orleans has for New York and earned her some of the loudest applause of the night.”
